Most of the time, despite all the things we like to project onto them (the success of cities, the greatness of countries, etc), sporting events are usually just sports. That's fine, as there's plenty to talk about even in those cases, but there are some rare moments when events on the rink/pitch/gridiron transcend sports and take on a larger significance. I shouldn't, but I do because of my love of the game. The Series was one of those rare sporting moments that was so much bigger than sports.
